Rallying Around Amelia: A Debate on Disability

The blogosphere and the airwaves are filled with indignation regarding what has happened to Amelia Rivera, a three year old who has a rare genetic disorder called Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome. Amelia needs a kidney transplant, but physicians at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia have denied her access due to her mental impairment. Parents of special needs children around the world are outraged not only for Amelia but at the notion that health care providers, even at one of the best children’s hospitals in the world, might arbitrarily decide to deny children treatment on the basis of their mental status.…
